Czech central defender Rozehnal leaves Newcastle for Lazio
Czech Republic defender David Rozehnal has signed permanently for Serie A club Lazio from Newcastle United. The 27-year-old centre-back spent the last three months with the Rome club after failing to make his mark at St James's Park. Rozehnal was one of Sam Allardyce's first signings last summer, joining in a £2.9 million deal from Paris St Germain.
But the tall defender, who started his career in the Czech Republic with Sigma Olomouc before moving on to Bruges and PSG, struggled in the Barclays Premier League and made just 16 league starts before he was left out of the side by the former Bolton boss. New boss Kevin Keegan then quickly shipped him off to Lazio on loan and Siena and Udinese were also believed to be interested in ending his Newcastle spell. But Lazio coach Domenico Caso has acted quickly to sign him on a permanant basis after his solid performance in the Czech Republic's 1-0 win over co-hosts Switzerland in the opening Euro 2008 game in Basle on Sunday night.
Rozehnal completes permanent Lazio move
Lazio have signed Czech Republic defender David Rozehnal from Newcastle United on a permanent deal, the Italian club have confirmed. Rozehnal, who is currently with the Czech Republic squad at Euro 2008, spent the second half of last season on loan at the Rome club. A statement on the Lazio website read: 'David Rozehnal is a Lazio player the club announces, having today concluded the transfer of the player after agreeing terms with English club Newcastle. 'Newcastle announced on their website that with the deal the club have recouped the £2.9million they paid to Paris St Germain for the player in June 2007.
Rozehnal seals Lazio transfer
Rome-based Serie A side Lazio have completed the signing of Czech Republic defender David Rozehnal from Newcastle. The 27-year-old, who joined the Magpies in a £2.9million deal from Paris St Germain last summer, had been on loan at the Italian club since January. Lazio have now exercised their option to sign the player permanently in a move Newcastle say will see them recover the fee they paid PSG.
Rozehnal Joins Lazio In Permanent Move
Good news today for Newcastle United, Lazio and David Rozehnal.
It really does look like Newcastle are stepping up their summer transfer business, and today the club announced the good news that Lazio have exercised their option to purchase David Rozehnal.
The sale will mean Newcastle have got the fee they wanted for David, who never quite made it at the club. It's being reported the agreed fee is £2.8M, which is what we paid for David when he was signed from PSG only last summer. Rozehnal has looked good for the Czech Republic in the latest games he has played, and it has obviously convinced Lazio that is is worth buying permanently.
David has earned the deal. There were also several other clubs starting to express interest in the 6′3″ center-back. That's more money in the coffers for Newcastle, and another significant wage earner now off the pay roll. We wish David all the best in Italy, and we think he can do very well in that league.
